FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN DESJARDINS
Oregon and Beyond
Ryan and his daughter.
Photography has been a passion since my pre-teen years when I only had access to an old 110 point and shoot. I bought my first film SLR, and Olympus OM-10, when I was 13. The rest, as they say, is history.
I've shot with SLRs, TLR, View Cameras, and digital point and shoot, SLRs and mirrorless cameras. I have loved them all, but I always felt I learned the most when I was using the 4x5 view camera. Making compositions "upside down and backward" really forced me to concentrate. Using 1 sheet of expensive 4x5 transparency film at a time forced me to make sure my exposure was right.
It was a great learning experience.
At the same time I was shooting 4x5, I got my first digital camera, and I loved that as well, and eventually went to shooting digital all the time. I will admit though, I missed shooting with film, especially the Fujifilm that I loved like Velvia and Acros.
In 2017 I purchased a Fuji XT-2 and with it I found pure photographic delight. The quality of the lenses, the features of the camera, and being able to simulate the films that I loved from the Fuji line years earlier felt like it brought my photography to a brand new place.
